Quarantine Crafts

It's an understatement to say that we are in strange times, but I'm not sure how else to put it.  Two weeks ago, I was living my typical life and today I'm working from home, in a make-shift office in my craft room, with the government suggesting I stay home for the foreseeable future.  I am well aware that this pandemic is negatively affecting many people and completely upsetting their life balance, due to illness, job loss or otherwise.  I consider myself very lucky to have employment, a stocked pantry, and my health, during these times.
I am choosing to view this time in my life as a gift.  Never before, and never again, will I be ordered to stay home and slow down every day life.  This freedom from the daily grind has allowed me to spend more time with my husband, to be more present in the moment (whether completing yard work, or my working from home responsibilities), and to explore new facets of my crafting hobby that I wouldn't have had the time or energy to otherwise.  Perhaps more importantly, I've also been reminded of the value that all of those things hold in my life.  I could get sick tomorrow, but I am taking this one day at a time, and today I am grateful and lucky.
One of the things I have enjoyed about being able to take more time is being more thoughtful in the cleaning, organization, and decoration of my home.  I thought this would be a perfect time to share a springtime craft project that I have been enjoying lately.
There are many patterns online for crochet embellishments that can be utilized to dress up a crochet project.  I enjoy utilizing different peoples patterns and putting them together to make something new and different.  During one of my frequent Pinterest binges, I stumbled across a pin for a crochet rose by Jessica at Living the Craft Life. I instantly decided I needed to make a few of these to put on a crocheted wreath I was working on.

Supplies:

  • Wreath Form: wire or foam wreath form (I typically use these from the Dollar Tree but they are also available at craft stores)
  • Jumbo Weight Yarn: 1-2 Skeins of a yarn of your choice (Some of my favorites include Ombre by Loops & Threads which makes 2 wreaths, Yarn Bee Chunky Knit Yarn or Yarn Bee Jumbolicious)
  • Jumbo Crochet Hook: 19-25mm
  • Other Yarn: from your stash for the flowers and leaves in same yarn weight with the appropriate hook size.  For this example, I used left over sections of a Caron Yarn Cake and Red Heart Super Saver in Frost Green

Construction:
Rebecca from Yarn + Chai has a wonderful youtube video that clearly shows how to crochet the yarn over the wreath form.  Please see the video linked below.

After covering your wreath form, crochet three (or more) flowers and three leaves according to the patterns by Jessica at Living the Craft Life that are linked.  Leave long tails on your flowers and leaves so that you are better able to sew them onto the wreath.

Lay your flowers and leaves on your wreath to determine the positioning for sewing them on.  Use a large needle to sew the flowers to the yarn wreath, tying both tails of each flower and leaf together after sewing to secure the embellishment.

You can see in this photo above, I sewed the flowers onto the wreath first, and then tucked the leaves in and sewed them on to fill out the space.

The last part, is the best part!
Hang it on your door and enjoy the new wreath you just made!

Looking Ahead

The new year is on the horizon!  So what is coming for Yarrrn Matey this year?  Keep reading! Plans can change so I will give myself grace if not all of this occurs but I am aiming high for 2023. Cue the Fireworks! I'm starting the year off with a bang!  Yarrrn Matey is officially a business! Without getting into all the details in this post (maybe I'll do that in another if you want), I have taken the step out of "other income" and into an actual business.   Yarn Collections I want to release at least four yarn collections this year, and will be exploring an additional advent style box at the end of the year.  All of these collections will be ready to ship and will be listed online.  I am currently working on a space themed collection that will be dropped in January.  You can follow along colorway previews  here .  I'll be sharing more details and finished pictures of the collection in mid January. In Person Events I want to increase th...

Buying Craft Supplies On A Budget

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a bargain hunter and hate paying full price for anything' so naturally, I've received a lot of questions from people about finding good deals on craft supplies.  There is a time and a place to spend full price on yarn or other supplies. The item is made by a small business The colorway or design is something you cannot imagine walking away from You have an ideal project in mind  I've certainly bit the bullet and ponied up some dough when I just can't walk away from a full price item. That being said, craft supply costs can add up quickly, especially when you like working with many different mediums.  Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks for buying craft supplies on a budget: Price Match! Michaels will price match Amazon (Amazon prices only, not independent sellers) as well as other competitors.  I'll take a few minutes in the supply aisle to search the item and see if I can find it cheaper elsewhere before ...
